Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. In her early years, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died and forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold) to be a waitress or cleaner so that they could survive. Ruth grew in a poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She was a student in the area. She quit school in just two years, to go into acting. The path was difficult to follow. Even though she got an interview at a theatre in New York posing as a writer for a mystery publication, no theatre jobs was offered. While in New York, she worked at a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. There she made a buck in the ushering industry during the during the day and then at night performed with the New England Repertory Company. This was her very first role as an actor. She also been accepted into Bishop-Lee Theatre School, where she studied drama.
